I'd like to know if the Dot5 silicon fluid is good for all brand of hydro brakes. Anyone know?

OEM manufacturers don't really advertise which oil would be compatible to their brakes so most people I know just end up paying an exhorbitant price to buy the OEM oil whenever they need to bleed their brakes or change the lines.
I've just gone through the motions of sourcing some alternative oil for my Harm brakes and found some that was less than 1/3 the price of OEM. (Harley Davidson.)

I don't really know but I'm assuming that the Magura brakes use mineral oil and Harm use Silicon Dot 5 and the others, well I don't really know. It's so ambiguous but I starting to think that Dot 5 silicon would work fine in all hydro brake set-up.

I think it would work in mineral oil setups cause it has a viscosity close to 5wt mineral oil. It also won't damage paint or plastic parts so it should be fine on all the rubber seals. Does anyone know conclusively if it works on most of the popular brands of brakes? I would like to get my information straight before I go telling friends to use what I use.

LHM plus works fine in Lauterbacher brakes, and looks identical (bright green) to the fluid that is supplied with the Harm / Mecatech brakes, although I've yet to try it.
Its what is used in citroen suspension, can be bought in most motor accessory stores, mine was £6.00 a litre but it was 3 or 4 years ago Very Happy

Lhm makes the seals go rock hard in Lauterbacher brakes
and then they start to leak like mad

LHM or any mineral based hydraukic oil is fine in Harm Brakes

But cant be used in Lauterbacker brakes as ozzy says.

Me and Mr whitehead always used LHM in Lb brakes and it was fine, but the seals may have changed as it was a few years ago.I remember he put it in the magura that was used for the hydro layshaft conversion on his LB and it ate the seals overnight Shocked

That automec is good as well though, used by many vintage car enthusiasts Very Happy
