Hi Guys,

HFR have been working on a large scale "ELECTRIC" (1/5th) 4WD / 4WS car with 14hp on tap Shocked just to make things interesting and in theory the car will hit 90mph very quickly if i can stop the drive shafts winding up like sticks of licquorice Confused Confused

The HFR "E5" build has started again after many problems with diffs and drive shafts, this thing for sure is very very fast Cool This car will be ready to campaign in 2010 to promote the possibility of a large scale off road car with the BRCA. I hope to bring it to a couple of LSOR meetings later in the year to test Shocked Shocked

We are playing with our home built ESC at the moment but with 50 volts and several buckets of amps i cant find components easily that can take the power... still i will keep you abreast of developments.

Regards

John

why not take the hp down to a more reasonable 8hp
its still more than the petrol cars and would possibly make it able to use the original components of the petrol car

I have have seen 9hp motors running lots of lipos and above in an mcd being tested (cant say where) but even these motors had to much torque low end 14hp motors is way to much in a large scale car that weighs 12-15kg, Diffs and drive shafts would bend and break so easy with this amount of power, all i can say is good luck john and yes i would like to eat my words but i would agree with ozzy (just this once lol ) to reduce the voltage or the kv of the motors to bring it down to a respectable 8hp, even this would have way to much torque I think but would be way more usuable than 14-15hp, It sounds like a great project but what sort of costs is going to be involved in somthing like this ? I know at the moment the car i drove and watched being tested came in at a mere £4000 and it was running 9hp but also had plenty of problems with that power. ESC was a major problem also and increasing the power above 10hp without the correct voltage and power from the battery would cause overheating issues for sure, It is one BIG challange I have to admit and i take my hat off to you as i know what is involved in such a big project like this so i wish you the best of luck and look forward to seeing what you come up with

If you need any advice/help, ask. Other than 'toy' car racing i also do electronics/software, including high power outputs/drivers Idea

It depends on the 'budget', but the components that used to be expensive for that type of thing (high current output drivers/fets) are far cheaper than they used to be.

At the French efra gp, there was a trade stand with an electric MCD 4 x 4 on display built/sold buy a company that made tune up parts for the mcd.

Hi Guys thanks for the kind words of warning... god ive broken several bits already but i do believe it can be done. 14 hp comes from a german Lehner motor (3080) series with some special winds and 10mm drive shafts
The ESC is the secret to the project and mapping a good power curve will be all important, and i will have that chat with you ian over the project.

I now have the drive shafts that can stick the power and i have the drive couplings also.
The diffs are Alloy billet jobs with industrial internals..... its all very agricultral at the moment.... but it works and i hope it will weigh less than 12 kg all up ready to go

48 - 50 volts will make the thing fly and i expect the car to have three levels of power during aceleration to make it more manageable.

Cant give all my secrets away but i can say it has taken me a year almost to get the thing anyway near running.

My aim will be to use this car as a demo of what can be done and what is interesting 20 / 30 minutes running is achievable ..... i think

The electric 4WD project is moving forward and the motor and reduction boxes are now fully coupled and actually run.
basically we have a potential 14hp motor mated to a planetery reduction box either side of the motor to realy simplify things.
The whole assembly is a tad longer than a coke can but a fair bit heavier !

The ESC design is the next big hurdle before the final 4WS and 4WD chassis bits and bobs are completed for the first assembly....

But its narrow ..... long..... and very, very light...... which should be interesting currently the gearing could see wild speeds if given enough room, however my hope is to persuade the BRCA to allow HF Racing to run the car during 2010 in the outlaw class as a shakedown and then run competitively for 2011 as a HF Outlaw 4WD Team if my wallet can take the abuse Wink

Anyways more info soon..... PS i have seen another 4WD car in the starting blocks so to speak this week.... and it looks very interesting too Cool Cool

I am aware that later in the year the mags will be reviewing an electric 4w largescale beast -- and I though it was HF racing getting there first!
